One of the oddest things about Newman House is that it doesn’t begin and
end, but rather has seasons.
Over the past few weeks, figures who have been so much a part of the
life and landscape have bid adieu, and set off on new exploits. Of course, being Newman, few were allowed to flee quietly, and the standard was set with Kenneth's departure: speeches made, anthems sung (British and Newman Househttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08765550768269958648noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18199393.post-80310689991094242292012-06-05T19:42:00.001+00:002012-06-05T19:44:07.176+00:00Jubilee Boat Party
Now that miles of bunting are beginning to be brought down, millions of flags are put aside and everyone gets ready to head back to work, a little word about the Roman triumph that was the Newman House summer boat party- complete with a tiara-wearing, 5’4” special guest.

Of course, for those who gave up more than they wish they had, the last few days will drag, but it seems only yesterday that we were having the ashen crosses marked on our foreheads. Now, we have marked our Lord's entry to Jerusalem, with the traditional procession up Gower Street (congratualtions to one of our number who took the time to explain Newman Househttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08765550768269958648noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18199393.post-81412010086001597922012-03-08T00:35:00.000+00:002012-03-08T00:35:05.556+00:00Lent- a time for 'sacrifice' in more ways than even we imagined..Presumably as a means of shoring up all of those Lenten resolutions (we're hitting the 'puppy dog eyes' stage now- there were one or two very sad faces on those who've given up meat at dinner this evening), Eimear and her boys- aka NuM3n- have prepared a little light relief. The house was gathered together under a shroud of mystery, and when the lights dimmed, what a masterpiece we beheld!!

A fortnight in, that same half will realise that they still haven’t thought anything up. I’ve heard of a few people finally having thought some up in time for Chinese New Year, but doubtless the rest of us will give it up as a bad job. Up until a few days ago, increasing numbers of residents had been setting up home in the library, with all manner of revision and essays being packed in, night after night. The work is, however, now done; the essays are in, the exam scripts have been sent off to… wherever exam scripts get sent off to, and people have begun leaving for Christmas. I am truly grateful for the opportunity of going to the pilgrimage to Aylesford. It was a beautiful day and this helped everybody present to enjoy the peace and tranquillity of this holy place. I toddled down to Whitehall for the Remembrance Sunday events at the Cenotaph, and while I would have had a far better view if I’d stayed at home and watched it on television, I’m glad I went. Once again, it was the silence- at 11am- that struck me.

It began as a mark of respect for the war dead in the UK in 1921, inspired by a famous 1915 poem written by Canadian medic John McCrae. On Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday, we will pause to acknowledge the sacrifice of those who have fallen in the service of their countrymen and in defence of freedom. We pray also Newman Househttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08765550768269958648noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18199393.post-54112515914926906152011-10-23T10:36:00.005+00:002011-10-30T13:56:13.453+00:00Newman House Houses, and the week to comeLast Sunday evening, a motley crew of us met (with varying understandings of the meeting time- mea culpa) to go for our first house meal, and had a grand old time in Zizzis. The House system at Newman is a great way of mixing people in new ways, and throughout the course of the year, there are meals, socials and sports days organised along those lines. The experience has been odd for those of us new to the house, as we've already had to say goodbye to some of last year's stragglers, including Chris, the great thespian, and Tamara, whose sendoff party in the garden was great fun. The Lord does not go to Lazarus immediately after his death. He is making a point: Lazarus is left long enough in the tomb so that when Jesus acts in this extraordinary way, it will be all the more powerful. No-one will be able to say ‘Very clever, but he wasn’t really dead.’ Jesus satisfies the Rabbinical authorities, fulfilling what the law demanded - but transforms its meaning.
